Poker is a simple and easy game of five cards having very simple rules also. They are easy to understand and various poker games are based on the basic rules of poker. In poker we use a standard pack of playing cards with 52 cards; there are also some poker games which use more or less cards depending upon the variations of the game. The card ranking for poker games are as follows:

Starting from ace the highest card and then all cards going from highest to lowest for e.g. ( highest card) king, queen, jack, 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,ace (lowest card).

Ace is usually considered as the highest card but this may be also the lowest card depending upon the variations of the game. There are four suites namely spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs, no suit is higher than the other. Mostly all poker games but not all have five cards and the highest hand wins. The number of cards dealt depends upon what type of poker game you are playing, such as if you are playing five card stud you are dealt with five cards ,and in a seven card stud you are dealt with seven cards.

Now let’s have introduction with some basic terms that are use while playing poker games.

Hand-combination of cards the player holds in his hand.

Play- a single game from one shuffle to other is called play.

Pot-a pot is the accumulated pool of money for the players at which they bet all through the game. The winner of any round wins the pot as a prize.

Hand tie or split pot-if two players have the same hand it is hand tie and they divide the pot money equally between them. When the pool is not exactly divisible then the player who called the highest bet gets the left over amount.

Ante-an enforced bet which has to be made by all the players before the cards are dealt.

Rake-rake is the commission charged by the poker room for each hand played. The rake is taken as a percentage of the pot in a given hand. Simply we can say if the rake is 10% and the pot reaches a final of $10 then the rake would be $1.

Showdown-after the last round of betting in a poker game, a show down occurs, in which each player must show off their hands and compare their five card poker hands.

So these were some of the basic terms used in poker games and almost in every poker games these terms are used. Analyzing them would help you in playing the poker game more easily and smoothly.
